Château de Brezé

A privately owned château near Saumur in the Loire Valley, protected as a French historic monument since 1979, and home to an active wine estate producing seven AOC-classified wines from cellars cut into the tufa rock beneath the property.

Château de Brezé stands at Brézé in Maine-et-Loire, with building campaigns recorded from the 16th and 19th centuries. It has been classified (classé) as a monument historique since 6 March 1979, with legal protection covering the façades and roofs of the château and its outbuildings, the moat and its bridge, the dovecote (fuye) in its entirety, and several named interior rooms with their decor, including the ground-floor salon, the great gallery, and the bedroom and adjoining study of the Bishop of Moulins. The estate is privately owned and, under the name Vignobles Colbert, operated by Mr and Mme De Colbert as a working wine domain. Seven appellations are produced here under AOC status: Saumur rouge, Saumur rosé, Saumur blanc, Saumur Fines Bulles, Coteaux de Saumur, Saumur-Champigny, and Crémant de Loire, aged in a network of cellars carved into the tuffeau limestone beneath the château.

Château de Brezé combines a protected historic monument — its classified façades, moat, dovecote, and period interiors — with a working AOC wine estate whose cellars run through tunnels cut into the tufa rock, a rare pairing of heritage architecture and active winemaking in the Saumur region.
